Student Nutrition Services
San José Unified’s Student Nutrition Services Department is dedicated to providing students with healthy and nutritious meals to support their growth, learning, and academic success. Foods available at our schools are carefully selected to contribute to students’ nutritional well-being; prepared in ways which will appeal to students and foster healthful eating habits; and served in age-appropriate quantities.
TopComplimentary Breakfast and Lunch for All Students
All San José Unified students are eligible to receive one complimentary breakfast and lunch every school day. We ask families to complete the Household Income form as part of the beginning of the year packet for students because it helps ensure that families and the district receive all the benefits to which they are entitled. If your family falls within specific income levels, you may qualify for prioritization for some San José Unified programs. We will send you a letter confirming your status, which may also be used to qualify for discounts or special pricing for services from outside vendors.
Families are also welcome to complete the federal Free and Reduced Price Meal Application which may increase our reimbursement rates from the National School Lunch/School Breakfast programs.
Special Meal Accommodations
Each special dietary request must be supported by a statement explaining the requested food substitution that is signed by a recognized medical authority. Please follow the instructions to complete the form. We will honor meal accommodations for students whose forms are properly completed, submitted, and processed by the Student Nutrition Services Department.

Future Chefs 2024
Calling all 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students! Can you cook? Future Chef’s National Culinary Challenge is back! We are looking for your favorite recipe from home or family recipe. The Future Chefs competition is a fun way to learn new cooking skills and show off your love of food!
Eight (8) lucky winners from San Jose Unified will be chosen as finalists to compete in our live contest at Gunderson High School on March 19, 2024. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners of our competition will receive special prizes! As a bonus, the winner of this event will be entered in the Future Chefs National Challenge for some additional great prizes!
Recipes can be submitted anytime between December 8, 2023, and Friday, January 26 , 2024, using the QR code to access the Student Recipe Submission Portal. Please encourage your students to participate. It’s the culinary event of the year!

¡Convocatoria para todos los estudiantes de 3º, 4º y 5º grado! ¿Sabes cocinar? ¡Nuevamente será el desafío culinario nacional de Future Chefs! Queremos conocer tu receta favorita con fruta o verduras. ¡La competencia Future Chefs es una forma divertida de aprender destrezas de cocina nuevas y mostrar tu amor por la cocina!
Se elegirán a ocho afortunados ganadores del Distrito Escolar Unificado de San José como finalistas y competirán en un concurso en vivo en la Escuela Preparatoria Gunderson el 19 de marzo de 2024. ¡Los ganadores del 1º, 2º y 3er lugar de nuestra competencia, recibirán premios especiales! Además, ¡el ganador de este evento competirá en el desafío nacional de Future Chefs, donde podrá ganar premios adicionales maravillosos!
