Careers in San José Unified

San José Unified employs talented and passionate individuals, in a wide variety of non-teaching and teaching roles. Positions are categorized into three general classifications based on the nature and requirements of the role. For those seeking more flexibility, a substitute position may be more appropriate. All of our current openings can be accessed at go.sjusd.org/jobs.

Certificated – Certificated positions include teachers, school nurses, instructional coaches, and other positions that require a credential.

Classified – Classified positions are non-teaching roles that do not require a teaching or administrative credential. Examples include accountants, clerks, drivers, paraeducators, trades and service staff who support the district or school’s effort to ensure that every student who enrolls in our schools has access to the resources to learn and succeed.

Administrators – Administrator positions include Principals, Assistant Principals, Directors, Managers, and other District positions that require an Administrative credential.

Substitutes – Substitute openings include certificated and classified positions, with responsibilities and requirements varying by role. Substitutes support the needs of our students and help maintain safe and supportive environments. Substitute positions offer a unique and flexible opportunity for people to engage in work that supports students in the community.

Substitutes

Substitute employees are an important part of our team at San José Unified. We are always seeking qualified individuals for a variety of teaching and non-teaching roles. As a large urban school district, we offer many substitute opportunities and can work with you to create a schedule that meets your needs. Join our talented pool of substitutes today and make a lasting impact on the students in your community.

The District has increased pay rates for (certificated) substitute teachers. Compensation ranges from $200-$350/day, depending on the type of assignment.

Requirements/Qualifications:

Certificated Substitutes

Certificated substitutes with a valid teaching credential or a 30-day sub permit issued by the Santa Clara County Office of Education are welcome to apply. See the criteria to qualify for a 30-day permit.

Teacher Evaluation System
